After battling the airport crowds the last thing you need is a confusing transfer from the airport to your accommodation. Discover the tips you need to catch the train from Copenhagen Airport to Copenhagen Central Station.

Which Train to Catch?

The most popular way to exit Copenhagen airport is by train. It is cheap and convenient, and takes less than 20 minutes from the airport to the city centre. The trains runs non-stop during the day and evening.

There are 2 different train lines to choose from, the Train and Metro. Deciding which one to catch is key, and it depends on which side of the city you are travelling to.

  • Train – refers to the Copenhagen S-Train run by DSB. This serves the urban and regional areas and has 170 km of tracks.
  • Metro – refers to Copenhagen Metro 24/7 Mass Rapid Transit System. The Metro has 20.4 km of tracks on 2 lines, M1 and M2.

Train From Copenhagen Airport to Copenhagen Central Station

The very first step is to figure out which station you are going to.

  1. If you’re going to Nørreport Station (a main hub in the city centre) – catch the Metro to Nørreport Station.
  2. If you’re going to Copenhagen Central Station – catch the Train to København H Station.

Note that the airport train station is called Kobenhavns Lufthavn or Kastrup.

Catching the Train

The Train station is located in Terminal 3. There’s a free shuttle bus from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3. Trains run at 10 minute intervals during the day, and about 1-3 times per hour at night. A trip from the airport to the city takes 13 minutes on the Train. See below for options to purchase a ticket.

Catching the Metro

The Metro station is located in Terminal 3. There’s a free shuttle bus from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3. Trains run at 4-6 minute intervals during the day, and at 15-20 minute intervals at night. A trip from the airport to the city takes 13 minutes on the Metro. See below for options to purchase a ticket.

You have several alternatives to purchase your train fare. Children are generally half price on public transportation in Copenhagen.

Public Transport Smartphone App

Download the app DOT Mobilbilletter to your smart phone. All you have to do is sign up using your mobile phone number, connect your credit card, and the rest is simple. I love this app, and so do the locals.

DSB Ticket

You will need a 3 zone ticket to get from Copenhagen Airport to the city centre. These can be purchased inside the airport at the ticket machines or the DSB office counter. Ticket machines do not accept notes, only credit cards and coins.

  • Single tickets are valid for 1 hour and cost 36 DKK (about $6 USD) for 3 zones.
  •  24 hour cards cost DKK 80 (about $13 USD) for 4 zones on all modes of public transportation.

We experience a 10 minute wait in the airport vending machine line, then realised we were in the wrong line, then a further 20 minutes in the next vending machine line. Do expect lengthy delays.

Copenhagen Card

The Copenhagen card gives free access to 79 attractions, and includes public transportation. Costs for 24/48/72/120 hours is 53/74/89/120 Euros.

City Pass

City Pass is your best option if you are planning to do lots of sightseeing around Copenhagen for 1-3 days, but don’t want to pay entrance fees to major attractions.

  • Adult 24 hour City Pass zones 1,2,3 & 4 costs DKK 80 (about $13 USD)
  • Adult 72 hour City Pass zones 1,2,3 & 4 costs DKK 200 (about $30 USD)

Taxi Fare from Copenhagen Airport to City Centre

Taxi fare is 350-300 DKK. That’s about $40-50 USD. Taxis accept credit cards. This might be a better option if you have 4 people and not much luggage.

Uber

Uber is generally a cheaper option than the taxi. Cost is 160-20o DKK to Copenhagen Central Station ($25-35 USD), or 140-180 DKK to Norreport station ($20-30 USD).

What is the Best Value Option

The DOT App is by far the easiest way to purchase tickets for using the Train or the Metro. Prices are basically the same as the City Pass, but the app is more convenient. The DOT app is very user friendly and much Much MUCH easier to navigate than the vending machines at the airport.

On our visit to Copenhagen we actually did most of our sightseeing on foot, as it’s a fairly compact city. Thus we just purchased a single fare from the Airport to the city centre, and were happy with that.

I recommend you purchase a train ticket online or on the app before you arrive, and head straight to the Train or the Metro train station in Terminal 3. You will avoid the long lines for tickets and maximise your time in this wonderful city of Copenhagen.
