Luxembourg City has a rich history dating back to ancient Roman times. More recently during the French Revolution, it was named the “Gibraltar of the North” due to it’s inpenetrable fortifications. Come with us on the Wenzel Walk in Luxembourg City, which discovers the history of this fascinating World Heritage area.

Video of Wenzel Walk
Here is Part 1 of my Wenzel Walk video. The route closely follows the official guide map route.
There is so much to see in this area that it has been divided into 2 videos. Part 1 covers the Bock Casemates and the Bock Promenade. Then, crossing the Alzette River, Part 2 covers the fortifications on the opposite side of the river, and a walk along the Alzette and Petrusse Valleys.
11 Sensational Spots on the Wenzel Walk
1. The “Old Town”
The Old Town is located right next to the Bock Promontory on top of the hill. Here you will see many magnificent old buildings including St.Michael’s Church, the oldest church in Luxembourg built-in 987.
2. Bock Casemates
The Bock Casemates have a history dating back to 963. Entrance is only 4 Euros, and these are not to be missed. In fact these are the number 1 attraction in Luxembourg City, and they give you awesome views over the Alzette Valley.
Allow about 1 hour for a good look through the Bock Casemates, which are open from March to October.
3. Alzette River Valley
On the whole the Alzette Valley can be seen from several vantage points. Overall the best vantage point is from the Bock Promontory, which is the starting point for the Wenzel Walk.
4. Castle Bridge
This magnificent old bridge was built in 1735, replacing the old timber drawbridge structure. Uniquely it is a double tiered structure, which you walk through if you enter the Bock Casemates. Consequently Castle Bridge connects the Upper Town to Bock Promontory.
5. Grund Gate
Built by the Spaniards in 1632 this is located just near the river crossing.
6. Wenzel Wall
Part of the defence ring of the city, originally 875 metres long with 37 towers and 15 gates. In fact there is a small section of well-preserved wall and towers left, and you can actually go inside a couple of these towers.
7. Moat near Wenzel Wall
In front of Wenzel Wall, this was discovered in 1992 by Archaelogists together with a medieval wooden bridge.
8. Krudelspuert
Old building dating back to 1395.
9. Neumünster Abbey
Also dating back to the 16th century is this old church building.
10. Second Gate of Trier
Built in 1590, another magnificent old gate which formed part of the cities fortifications.
11. Jacob Tower, the “Old Gate of Trier”
An old gate to the Wenzel Wall, which formerly had a drawbridge and a cannon casemate.
