In Day 13 of our epic family travel adventure we get back onto the Vienna Big Bus Tour around the city areas. We complete full loops of both the red route and the blue route. Along the way we listened to the full guided tour, which was a fantastic account of Vienna’s colourful history. This is a beautiful city with an amazing history, wonderfully described on the Big Bus Tours.
History Lessons on Vienna Big Bus Tour
We learnt how some of history’s most important people lived in this city. We saw Schonbrunn Palace where Napoleon Bonaparte stayed and his son lived. Also at Schonbrunn Marie Antoinette lived in the west wing, and Adolf Hitler used to stroll around and paint pictures.
We saw the school of fine arts where Adolf Hitler was refused entry on several occasions, and the hotel where he once worked as a maintenance man. We saw houses where Strauss, Mozart and Sigmund Freud lived. And many more.
This is an amazing city with an amazing history, and we were privileged to get a first hand account.

Vienna Military Museum
Our highlight on this day was the History Military Museum. This is a remarkable museum, and we were excited to see the tank garden which is home to many restored German tanks. The entry was only 8 Euros for two of us. We explored the WW1 and WW2 sections.
It was amazingly eerie to see the war memorabilia from the Nazi perspective as most of the displays were German. We went through the excellent naval exhibit, then upstairs to the historic / medieval section. This was an amazing display of medieval weapons and armory, as well as many battle scene paintings dating back many centuries.
It is well worth seeing the military museum for the beautiful building alone. But with the cheap entry and the astounding displays this museum offers extraordinary value. The only downside – the tank garden was blocked off for renovations. We did ‘sneak’ around the back for a peak through the fence, so we didn’t miss out completely.
Other Attractions in Vienna
We went on to see many other attractions on thisVienna Big Bus Tour such as:

- The Swiss embassy – a building dating back some 500 years
- St.Charles Church – yet another amazing church
- The Museums Quartier – home to many amazing buildings and statues
- Haus of Music – a 7 level museum of music
- Flak Towers on the outskirts of the city – built by the Nazi’s to defend Vienna and still standing
